For those more into multi-channel HT than I, one could use a 103/D and Audiopraise board together with up to four external stereo DACs for up to 7.1 HT. With the 103D's built-in stereo downmix (for non-2.0 tracks), this has worked seamlessly. Schiit DACs do not respond well to HDMI de-embedders, so using a 103/D with the Audiopraise board is the only way I could get two-channel, 24/192 PCM (including high-quality DSD-to-PCM conversion at up to 24/176.4) from any disc/file to my Yggdrasil via coaxial cable in my living room stereo/headphone rig. I use this combo to great effect ( see choice #1, option 1 in previous link). With all the hubbub lately on SBAF around reclockers, #noUSB, etc., I'm surprised people, especially those with living room / HT rigs, aren't looking at the Oppo 103/D with an Audiopraise Vanity HD board. I've outlined these issues and potential solutions here.

SACDs are unplayable and certain audio tracks on movie discs are limited to lower resolution versions. Forgot to buy one last year.Īs hinted at, the downside is that SACD/Blu-ray disc players are difficult to pair with external DACs when using the player's coaxial/optical output playback due to copyright restrictions. Oppo doesn't list the OEM Roku sticks on its website anymore. AppleTV or similar via HDMI input seems the way to go for that functionality now. ("The only snag is that the UDP-203 doesn’t offer any video streaming from services such as Amazon or Netflix."). Oppo is also doing away with the built-in video streaming functionality. HDMI 2.0 input confirmed ( see picture of player rear). I found the Trusted Reviews UDP-203 preview more helpful.

i am using the mini-Toslink adapter that comes with the STX II - would this have a detrimental effect on the light transmission (and therefore sound quality)? I was considering the Lifatec glass cable, but this would be expensive with import taxes.Ĭlick to expand.103D / 1080p plasma owner here too. The Toslink cable I am using is an Ixos XHD308. There is also the Cantatis Overture, which is quoted as having jitter less than 75pS. I imagine difference between the cards would come down to the quality of the power filtering, the accuracy of the clock, and the quality of the optical output transmitter? Does anyone have experience of the STX II versus a professional card? Or perhaps could offer a technical critique / opinion of the STX II ?

The RME, however, has Linux drivers and Toslink output without requiring a breakout cable.

I was wondering how the Xonar Essence STX II compares to a professional sound card such as the Lynx E22 or RME HDSP 9632 / HDSPe AIO using S/PDIF out? I don't believe the Lynx has a driver for Linux nor Toslink output. The effect is subtle and dependent on the music.

This gave a further improvement, the instruments were better defined and the sound stage became more three dimensional. I compared the Elfidelity + Supra USB to Toslink from the motherboard, I could not hear any difference.Īfter reading about the Lynx and RME cards on this forum, I decided to try a Xonar Essence STX II with TCXO clock source. The difference between the two USB cables was smaller with the power filter than without. This made the sound further clearer and better defined. Next, I added an Elfidelity AXF-100 PRO III internal USB Power Filter. I changed this to a Supra USB cable and this made things clearer. After reading much information on here and on the other website, I have been experimenting with different methods of feeding my Modi Multibit from my Linux PC.
